Will Boase
Para hacer fotos de las cosas que pasan hay que ir a donde pasan. No se puede ser foto reportero en un despacho. Por eso, si se trabaja en esa profesión y se vive en África, probablemente en este momento la mejor opción sería ir a Sudán del Sur, país recién nacido por escisión del antiguo Sudan. Justo ahí es donde se encuentra Will Boase, ¡mientras yo escribo esta presentación!
Will Boase obtuvo, hace poco más de un año, un Grado Universitario en Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales, especialidad en Fotografía, en la Sheffield Hallam University, una de las numerosas universidades de esta ciudad inglesa perteneciente al Condado de Yorkshire del Sur. Podría haberse quedado en Inglaterra tras acabar sus estudios, pero Will quería ser fotoperiodista, así que decidió que lo mejor era hacer las maletas y viajar a África.
Y allí continúa: Ahora mismo acabo de leer un tweet de Will Boase en el que dice: “Ahora, a toda velocidad a través del verde, verde Sudán del Sur, en el Expreso LOL, poniéndome al día en Twitter sobre últimas noticias acerca de Sudan del Sur”. La tecnología todo lo facilita. . . ¡pero aún hay que ir a donde pasan las cosas!
Nada más terminar sus estudios Will Boase se marchó a Cracovia, en Polonia, para desarrollar un trabajo documental sobre la industria siderúrgica y después se fue a trabajar como fotógrafo freelance en Uganda, consiguiendo un contrato de colaboración con NUTI (North Uganda Transition Initiative), un programa financiado por USAID (una agencia independiente del gobierno federal de los Estados Unidos) para apoyar el crecimiento económico del norte de Uganda.
Y allí está desde entonces, haciendo fotos en la zona. También ha colaborado, como fotógrafo, con Busoga Trust, una organización benéfica encargada de llevar el agua potable a varias regiones de Uganda, así como con algunas revistas y periódicos de Gran Bretaña, Estados Unidos y África del Este. ¡No está nada mal para tan sólo un año de trabajo!
Para esta pequeña exposición virtual del trabajo de Will Boase, inicialmente, pensamos en elegir una serie de diez fotografías tomadas en Uganda, pero al final decidimos que era preferible terminar la muestra con, al menos, un par de fotografía de los trabajos en blanco y negro que Will realizó en su época de estudiante. Al fin y al cabo, creo, él siente un cierto aprecio por ese tipo de fotografía, ¡cómo sino iba a ser poseedor de una histórica Leica IIIb! Es posible que la exposición hubiera quedado más homogénea sólo con fotos africanas, pero creo que así se muestra mejor la trayectoria de este joven fotógrafo.
To take pictures of things that happen you have to go wherever they happen. It’s not possible to be a photojournalist in an office. So if you work in that profession and you live in Africa, probably now the best option would be to go to South Sudan, a country born by its secession from the old Sudan. Right there is where Will Boase is, while I am writing this presentation!
Just over a year ago, Will Boase was awarded a BA (Hons) First Class in Photography from Sheffield Hallam University, one of the two universities in the English city in South Yorkshire. He could have stayed in England after finishing his studies, but Will wanted to be a photojournalist, so he decided it was best to pack up and travel to Africa.
And there he continues: Right now I just read a tweet from Will Boase in which he says: "Now whizzing through green, green South Sudan on the LOL Express, catching up on old Bugle episodes". Technology facilitates everything. … But still you must to go where things happen!
After his graduation Will went to work as a freelance photographer in Uganda, obtaining a contract with NUTI (North Uganda Transition Initiative), a program funded by USAID (an independent federal government agency of the United States) to support economic growth and to increase the capacity of the local media in northern Uganda.
And he has been there more or less ever since, taking pictures in the area. He has also worked as a photographer for the Busoga Trust, a long established charity that installs clean water sources throughout Uganda, as well as some magazines and newspapers in the UK, US and East Africa. He also spent two months in Krakow, in Poland, to cover an international film festival and develop a documentary on the steel industry. Not bad for only one year of work!
For this small virtual exhibition of the work of Will Boase, initially, we thought about choosing a series of ten photographs taken in Uganda but in the end, we decided it was better to end the exhibition with at least a couple of photographs of works in black and black Will made in his student days. After all, I think he feels a certain appreciation for this type of photography, …. Will is the owner of an historical Leica IIIb! It is possible that this exhibition would have been more homogeneous only with African photos, but I think that so this exposition shows a most wide trajectory of this young photographer.
